How many Earths do we need?

How many Earths would we need if everyone on the planet lived like you?

The clever team at Global Footprint Network have not only developed a calculator so this can be worked out, they have also collated international data to determine an Earth Overshoot Day. This day marks the date when all of humanity have used more from our planet than it is able to renew in the entire year. This year, Earth Overshoot Day fell on August 1 (the earliest one yet).

Right now, to live like an average Australian we need just over 4 Earths. And for an average New Zealander, 3. The current Global Biocapacity (area of productive land available to produce resources or absorb carbon dioxide waste) is 1.68 global hectares per person. If you take the ecological footprint (for your country, or your own personal footprint) and divide it by 1.68 - that’s how many Earths are needed

Understanding your own personal footprint can be confronting, but it’s a huge step in right direction.
